My first experience working in the restaurant business was Mackinaw Island at the age of 14. I really did not think too much about working in the restaurant business at that age, it was just a fun job for the summer.
When I was in high school, I worked at my father’s business -Multi Feed Incorporated Automotive Engineering Northville, Michigan as a General Secretary.
My sister Deborah, was working at a restaurant in Plymouth, Michigan called Café Bon Homme, she suggested I start working in the kitchen. My first day on the job, they told me to go down stairs and put on a chef jacket. It fit like a glove, a defining moment that started my career path. I worked with some serious culinarians – Chef Greg Goodman, owner of Café Bon Homme & formally, of MacKinnon’s in Northville & Sous Chef, Greg Murphy, previous job was at the Famous Golden Mushroom. I worked at Café Bon Homme for five years. I loved it.
Then a friend of mine was a secretary at Schoolcraft College, she gave me an application to the culinary program, a year later, I was accepted. Culinary school, opened a completely new aspect to my interest in cooking, it was culinary competition. I joined the culinary salon team & followed Chef Mary Brady, owner of Diamond Jim Brady’s Bistro in Novi, in her quest to become an executive chef. We traveled the United States and Europe with the salon team – it was one of the highlights in culinary school.
